Winter 2008

As winter arrives it's time to kick back, relax, get warm and discover what your local library has on offer to while away the winter blues.

Tiny Treasures and Winter Warmers

On cold, grey days, when the temperature plummets and life seems to reflect the weather, pop into either Kilmore or Seymour Libraries and enjoy the colourful, visual feast on offer. Various arts, crafts and quilts, all created by library borrowers, will be on display at both libraries during the winter months in order to brighten those dull winter days. Tiny Treasures are to be found in Kilmore for the month of July and Winter Warmers will be on display in Seymour for the whole of August.

More holiday fun to come to Wallan

If you were one of the over 100 children and their parents who were entertained by the talents of Tony Bones and his fantastic theatre group during the last school holidays, bet you can't wait for the next one to arrive.  Wallan Library, in conjunction with the Wellington Square Management, are intending to offer a good quality children's event each school holidays. Watch our for details of our July attraction and be there!

Rave Reviews by Pauline Roberts

The Book of fame - Lloyd Jones

The Age called this book, "starkly beautiful" and even though it is about the 1905 All Blacks tour of Britain I would have to agree that the description fits perfectly. I must also admit that although I have tried to understand the rules of Rugby, even borrowed a basic book about it once, it still strikes me as a fairly brutal and uninspiring game. However Jones has written about the tour, and the Kiwi boys who played in it, with love and awe and the simplicity of the text only enhances the melding of history and imagination. "People stopped them in the streets. 'Mr Gallaher, Mr Gallaher, sir. How does it feel to be famous?" "The pyramids are famous son." Understated and original - like the team who scored 830 points and conceded just 39. A great read.

A Piano in the Pyrenees - Tony Hawks

Tony Hawks, stand-up comic, itinerant author and TV commentator on a range of topics - just think Grumpy Old Men- has put pen to paper yet again to write of his experiences deciding to buy a holiday house in France and then to actually live in and renovate it. It could probably be regarded as the definitive "how not to" book for all these things, but in the process it's a good laugh. Amazingly this Englishman finds himself settling into the rural backwater in the far south of France where he has decided to fulfil his childhood ambition of finally mastering the piano. Luckily for him the locals accept his eccentricities and foibles with good humour. However my favourite Hawks' book still remains "Round Ireland with fridge". Reserve both.
